    Imagine you're on the edge of a river bank. The river is pretty wide and the water is pretty torrid. You know one thing - you want to get to the other side. There's no bridge, but there are plenty of stones around that look big enough to get you there.

    You start throwing stones out into the river. Some of them just roll right down the river, but that's OK, you just throw a few more out there. Some of them land great and look just like stepping stones. So you throw another and another and another.

    Standing on one side of the river bank is like starting your business. When we start in business we know we want to get to the other side - generally meaning the side of success. We throw strategies and goals out like stepping stones hoping to go from one point to the next.

    So back to the river...

    After working tirelessly for ages you take one step out, then another, then you realise that there's no more stones in stepping distance from this one. So you back track and try another stone, only to go a few more paces to find the same result.

    You realise that although you've put in a lot of time and effort, you haven't actually created a direct path to the other side. In fact looking back, you really never took the other side into consideration at all.

    What is your other side?

    I have had two conversations in the last few days with Mumpreneurs who have forgotten their other side. They may have had a glimpse of it at some time but in talking to them I could see how they were throwing out stones in many directions, but not lining them up to take them where they really wanted to head.
