If you watch Fox News for a week, you are likely to see Sean Hannity or one of his buddies single out Rosie O'Donnell or some similar talking head as a way of indirectly attacking the Democratic Party. Folks like Hannity have a clear agenda - take the worst possible statements by people who hold themselves out as liberals and attempt to characterize such people as some kind of uncrowned spokesperson for the whole party. Professional journalists have a code of ethics; they believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. The duty of the journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues.
Conscientious journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist's credibility. Members of the Society share a dedication to ethical behavior and adopt this code to declare the Society's principles and standards of practice.
That sounds good, doesn't it?
That's normal. I didn't write this, I copied it from the Society of Professional Journalists, without changing a comma.
If I were a good-looking, highly-paid member of this Guild, I would go out on the field and search for interesting stories, the kind that has an impact on my fellow citizens.
For example, most of us get the flu once a year; so why not make a two-minute piece about the fact that most Americans are not correctly prepared for the flu season.
So I go out on The Field.
The Field is the name that I give to my inbox; this is where all my e-mail arrives. I have corporations and public relations companies constantly sending me "made for media" so-called news report.
For instance, a company called D S Simon Productions Incorporated has been serving public relations and marketing professionals since 1986 by delivering their messages through video, that's what the corporate website says.
One of their recent assignments came from Matrixx Initiatives, a company listed on the NASDAQ. They have missed their earnings targets for the two past quarters, so I suppose that they are low on cash and could use some free publicity.
So they sent to my inbox a video with all the bells and whistles, including a doctor paid by the company and a self-sponsored flu survey. The conclusion: we should all run to the store and buy Zicam. The only possible downside is that we could all lose the sense of smell forever. It's called anosmia. I'm not a specialist, but you can read about it on the following links:

And oh, by the way, I'd love to take credit for this discovery, but the guys who did the real work are called the Center for Media and Democracy.
But, then again, I'm not a highly paid professional journalist, employed by a major network, which reaches an audience of millions of TV viewers and adheres to the journalist's code of ethics.
