Many staunch Christians would frown at a statement that reads: Our living God is a lawless being. Some of them may agree that ours is a lawless, sinless God. Yet many sincere Christians may agree to the plausible statement that says ours is a law abiding God.

But is God the creator of heaven and earth, bound to follow any law? Must God follow the Ten Commandments to the letter? Must he follow the law of nature? Does God follow some formulas that have been inscribed in a stone somewhere? Does God obey some orders that he receives from some superior beings?

The almighty God is absolutely free and does what he wants (Exodus 33:19, Romans 9:15-21.) God does what pleases himself. God is the ultimate lawmaker and lawgiver. He is the lawless lawgiver. He is above the laws that he gives to human beings because those laws are irrelevant to how he operates. Any law does not govern him.

For example, when he says do not steal. This law is completely irrelevant to God because he owns everything that is in the earth. There is no one whom God can steal from. The fifth commandment, among others, is also evidently irrelevant to God because he is eternal and does not need to honor any father or mother so that he may live longer. After all he has neither father nor mother. Therefore, God is a lawless lawgiver because he does not need to abide by the laws that he gives to his creations.

One married lady shouted in rage arguing that God must have been unfair to love Jacob and hate Esau even long before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad. Immediately, one male student answered her with the following question: “Were you unfair to the other millions of men when you chose to marry your husband?”

That sharp and relevant question made her to understand that at least God needed one of the twins to become the father of the nation of Israel through whom he would bless the whole world. At most, she understood that God knew the potential behaviors, choices and capabilities of those twins because he is omniscient. Therefore, she rested assured that God’s omniscience helps him to do whatever he wants without being unfair and without suffering failure or resentment.

Just because God is equipped with his omnipresence, omniscience and omnipotence then he is fit to live a lawless life because he is self-sufficient. He needs no external support and his life is not threatened by any condition. He pays no loyalty to any authority.

Secondly, it was God’s original intention that man should obey His laws because man is not God’s fellow lawmaker and neither is he his rival. After all, both man and God’s law are both God’s handiwork and brainchild.

When man became as lawless as God is, and then he began to do as he pleases and not as per God’s will. He began to do what he wants and not what God wants him to do.

A lawless person does not want to submit to any law. Yes, the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God (Romans 8:7-8). It is true that he cannot please God because he does what he wants and wants to please himself alone.
