Entrepreneurialism - Passion Equations
“Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” –Harold WhitmanThe world in which we live is filled with frightened people. Life has a way of driving the passion for life out of us. If you are reading this because you have an interest in entrepreneurialism then you must have either spark of life or a dream demanding release. Otherwise you would not be here. Have you found an idea you love?"To love an idea is to love it a little more than one should." – Jean RostandThe love of an idea is a consummate risk-taking adventure. There are no promises and failure is possible, yet an entrepreneur must abandon themselves to that place where they find an idea they love knowing that there is a spot just past research and rationalism where there is no turning back.“Passion, though a bad regulator, is a powerful spring.” – Ralph Waldo EmersonThe drive that you possess in developing a business idea is bold, noble, misunderstood and altogether powerful. The passion is bound to spring you into action. This is the place where reason must be welcomed to the party.“If passion drives you, let reason hold the reins.” – Benjamin FranklinLike a horse at top speed, like Rags to Riches at Belmont, the life instilling nature of the pursuit of a dream is staring at the finish line and refusing to look back. It is your ability to reason that allows you to correct and guide your passion, but only if reason is applied. If not, you may only be astride a runaway horse.used one of those pot scrapers and it scratched my window. You can bet I didn’t use that one in our windshield wash. After the window is cleaned with the cloth covered sponge and window cleaner, take a portion of the newspaper and dry the entire window. The black and white portion of the newspaper is perfect for this business. It is cheap, it dries the window quickly and it doesn’t leave streaks. Your customer will appreciate it. When the two cleaners are almost through, the spokesperson needs to approach the next vehicle, introduce self, and group and ask for the next job. Each windshield wash job takes as little as one minute to complete. After you do several jobs you will become efficient and get the job done quickly. Remember there will be others in your group doing the same thing so you can see profits mount up quickly. Most people donate at least 50 cents some $1, yet others especially if they are affiliated with the group will donate $5 - $10. Yaweeeeee! I have found from our observations that our group averages $75.00 per hour. You may do more or less than what we did. Important helpful tips: Use a grocery cart to place all of the used newspaper in for later disposal. Make sure you remove all trash from the site. Take it home for disposal and don’t use the stores trash cans. If you do, they will resent you for it and not let you come back. Have the group director collect all of the cash. This person can go around to all of the spokespersons and collect the cash and oversee the operation. Purchase new supplies needed from the cash you generate. This means less out of pocket expense for your group. If you are working several hours, take a portion of the profit and buy pizza and colas for your group. This isn’t hard work, but people do get hungry and thirsty and would appreciate a break. If your group is in a membership drive or has another cause, have the spokesperson give the donating person a brochure about your group. If you are a church group you may wish to give them a schedule of service about your group. If you are the scouts, you may wish to give them a flyer about your troop. If you have another profit making Successful Partnering--Five Pitfalls to Avoid Welcome to the wonderful world of fundraising through the windshield washing business. Sit back, grab a cup of coffee or cola, and relax as you learn from this manual on how you and your group can make up to $75.00 an hour or more for your groups needs.Caveat Pars, partners beware!Partnering, as with any activity, has its unexpected challenges and pitfalls. Actually, this is probably more so than in traditional adversary relationships. In adversary relationships you must always watch your back. In relationships based on trust or what is perceived as trust, one can be lulled into a false sense of security. While you need to protect yourself from these dangerous situations, you do not want to create them by exhibiting the wrong attitude. To keep your alliances healthy, conflict should be dealt with immediately. This is your best chance for moving forward in any relationship. But, improperly challenged, conflict can be the death sentence to an alliance.Alliance conflict emanates from five core areas:1. Values2. Goals3. Facts4. Procedures5. MisinformationConflict doesn't have to be a roadblock to a successful alliance if you and your partnering alliance members are willing to resolve the conflict at the core level, in a timely manner. In fact, the resolved conflict can lead to a stronger relationship through improved communication. Unfortunately, conflict that is left unresolved will lead to fatal flaws that will erode the relationship. Some of the more common areas of conflict in alliance relationships are accessibility, culture clashes, hidden agendas, management tenure, poor communications and unrealistic expectations. Many advocates and consultants for alliances believe that the alliance mortality rate is around 50 percent. If you wait to build partn The windshield washing business is a business in which you can earn profits quickly for just a little investment (approx $2.00). This is a simple business that really works. Because it is easy, please don't over look its simplicity without giving it an honest try. It works! We use Windex, Newspapers and a sponge to make $75.00/hour. Several years ago as Youth Director of the United Pentecostal Church in Hackberry, LA (a small town population of 2,500 people approximately 30 miles south of Lake Charles, LA) if was my job to raise funds for our various projects for our group or donation to other causes. In our fund raising efforts in the past, we have tried candy sales, pizza sales, item sales, walk-a-thons and all sorts of other gimmicks. Most of these brought poor participation and little income for our youth group. It seems if we wanted to raise money for our group it was struggle after struggle. Perhaps you are there now. When we came upon the idea of a windshield wash, at first it seemed a little CRAZY. Who ever heard of making money from a service as simple as this. WOW!!! .....That's a cool word, I'll believe I'll spell it backwards...WOW. Where was I. Oh yea. We were shocked at how fast this little business generates mountains of green stuff called cash. Zowee! We found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I have walked my last 10 mile walk-a-thon. No more candy and pizza sells. Keep your eyes glued to these simple pages and I will reveal to you how you can do the same for your youth group. Your gonna love this business. LET'S DANCE (Here is the juicy stuff you've been waiting for) The 3 items that you need to begin your windshield washing business are:
Perhaps you have these items lying around the house and it won’t cost you a cent to get started. I recommend 2 sets of the above 3 items for each group of 3 people in your group. If you have 12 people in your group, then you need 8 bottles of glass cleaner, 8 cleaning sponges and 8 newspapers. Don’t worry if you don’t have the money to get this right off the bat, as you can purchase more with profits you will make. Start with one set of the above items. Work this business according to our instructions, and soon you will have enough money to purchase many more sets of cleaning supplies. TIME TO GET STARTED Step 1. Decide where you want to conduct your first wash. When I lived in Hackberry, LA the decision was an easy one. I worked for the busiest business in town, a grocery store called Brown’s Food Mart. I spoke with the owner and he gave me the go ahead. If your town is big enough for a Wal-Mart or K-Mart, this is where I recommend going. I choose this for 3 reasons. Number 1 is because both of these companies are people oriented and like to help out the community. You should have no problem getting permission from the manager to conduct a wash. Number 2 reason is because every one goes to Wal-Mart or K-Mart and you will have an unending supply of people to donate to your cause. (We have also used large grocery store parking lots, so don’t limit yourself to the big boys, because it will work anywhere). Number 3 reason is you can supply your group with additional supplies as you need them without having to send someone for them. Step 2. Approach the Manager and ask his/her permission to conduct a Windshield Wash. Find out who the manager is and ask for an audience. Approach him/her and extend your hand in greeting. "Good Morning, My name is Al Pooser (only says this if it is your name. I say this because it is my name) and I am with Kidz 4 Kidz (I’ll explain why to use a name such as this at a later time) a local youth organization. We are in the process of raising funds to send our children on a missionary trip, raise money for the band, raise money for Girl Scout Uniforms or whatever your cause is. We would like permission to use your parking lot in a little fundraiser. We approach people and offer to wash their auto windshield for a small donation to help Kidz 4 Kidz! Once permission is granted, we simply apply Windex to the front windshield of the auto, scrub it with our sponge (at this point hand a sponge to the manager so that he can see it will not damage the windshield) and then dry it with newspaper. We then collect the money as they either enter or exit the store. We will make sure all newspaper and trash is picked up prior to leaving the parking lot and all supplies that we need will be purchased from your store." Inform the manager what day you will be on his/her parking lot and at what time you will begin. Step 3. Organize your group. I will spell it out step-by-step with a group as few as 3 people and you can upsize the supplies according to the number of people in your group. If you wish start with 1 each of the supplies, but I recommend to make it go faster and more profitable to use 2 or each of the supplies. You need a spokesperson for each group. This person needs to be outgoing and not afraid of speaking to someone. They need to be loud enough to be heard. Not the shy silent type, here. This person needs to approach the driver of the vehicle as they get out of the vehicle and say "Good Morning we are with Kidz 4 Kidz (or the name of your group) and for a small donation we would like to wash your windshield", then remain quiet. If the person ask a question, just answer it. Mostly they ask about your group or what you are raising money for, then they pull out change or dollars from thier pocket or purse and give it to you. Zowee! Time to go to work, you have hit pay dirt. "For a small donation, we would like to wash your windshield." This little saying speaks volumes. It is short, easy to say. It conveys to the person that you approach, exactly what you want. When you introduce yourself with the name of your group, especially if it is a youth group, people automatically want to help. It is a built in philosophy because people see so much bad press when it comes to youth, that when they see youth doing good they automatically wish to help. A little word about competition. It doesn’t matter how many groups are washing windows around you, the bottom line is competition doesn’t matter. You can have a group on every corner around you and it still wouldn’t bother your response. As soon as your spokesperson gets permission and collects the cash or check, the 2 others in the group approach the auto on either side of the front windshield. Each person sprays the windshield on the side that they are on. If they are not tall enough you might bring a small step stool from home to reach the middle of the windshield. After spraying a generous portion of window cleaner on the window (more spray is required in hot climate) take the cloth covered sponge and gently scrub the entire side of the window that you are working on. If you are unsure of the type of cloth covered sponge to use, test a small portion of a window on your car and see if it scratches your window. When I first started I used one of those pot scrapers and it scratched my window. You can bet I didn’t use that one in our windshield wash. If you have another profit making Have You Hugged a Customer Today? cost approximately $1.00 a bottle at most discount or dollar type stores. Soft Sponge – This is the type that has a sponge surrounded by cloth. The sponge holds the liquid for cleaning and the cloth aids in cleaning the windshield. NEVER and I repeat NEVER use the scouring pot scraper type cleaning pad. This makes tiny scratches on the windshield and you will be replacing windshields. You want to make money, not lose it. Fortunately, I used one of these on my own vehicle before we used this on customers vehicles. Newspaper – Your local town paper now becomes something besides bad news. You want to use the black and white sections, not the glossy colored sales papers. This is used to dry the windshield after scrubbing them clean. It all started a couple of weeks ago when a friend asked me if I could scan and print some of her slides. No problem, I said.Boy, was I mistaken....As it turns out, I seldom use my scanner for slides. And no matter how many different 'Kathy' techniques I tried to get it to work, nothing. I even resorted to reading the online manual (what was I thinking?). Still didn't work. After several (okay, many!) bull-headed attempts to figure it out myself, I called the Epson tech help line. The good news, they actually answered the phone near midnight. The bad news? My scanner was out of warranty, so I'd have to pay $9.95 for their tech service.I was pretty desperate, so $9.95 seemed a bargain. And indeed, I got the help I needed. I was, once again, a happy pup.Didn't think about it again until the telemarketer called today....1 - Good For Me Before the call, I had virtually no attention on Epson, my scanner, or the slides that are now beautifully printed. And I must say, when I answered the phone and heard, "Is this Kathleen?" (my first clue that it's not a friend calling!), I was a little annoyed. For whatever reason, I didn't hang up. And I answered all the rep's questions about my experience with the Epson tech guys.I was reminded that I didn't call just once, but twice - when I had some follow-up questions a few days later. The call reminded me how great it was to be able to access their tech support 24 hours a day. (Is it just me, or do you, too, find that everything breaks down in the middle of the night?)An Perhaps you have these items lying around the house and it won’t cost you a cent to get started. There are endless business centres to turn to, and what should be a simple job ends up taking day after day of your valuable time. That’s where using an office finding service can help.Similar to how you use a comparative online service, like Kelkoo to compare costs when shopping for books, CDs, travel, computing etc., an office finding service will find you suitable office premises just by making one phone call or registering your requirements online. Instead of having to go to each business centre and hunt around on the internet, a free office finding service will provide you with a number of suitable, available office solutions making the hunt simpler than ever. What Type Of Office Space Do You Need? Before picking up the phone, you do need to know what type of office space you require. Typically, the company offering a free office finding service will be experts in the property market and should be able to ask you the right questions to work out the type and size of office you need, but it is good to have an understanding of the basic types of offices available before you begin. Most of you are probably working in a conventional office. A conventional office is basically a shell that your company has rented out over a long period of time, typically 5-10 years. It gets to the point with all the rules and regulations and government agencies screwing with you and people like Elliot Spitzer threatening to do a PR drive bye shooting on your company, stock valuations and such, that it is not really worth dealing with.It is not only about cheap labor, although shareholders equity and quarterly profits are king indeed. You see this is the Ayn Rand affect as much as anything else. It is also an issue of money flows and cycles, these issues have plagued civilization for thousands of years and cheap imported linen from Asia and Far Middle East nearly took down the UK. In the Deming years we got cocky too, over unioned and regulated our Auto Makers then too.We need to pay attention to money flows all the way around, Mexico, Canada, Malaysia, China, India, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia and this oil issue in the Middle East we send way too much money away and it is not re-circulating because we do not make anything in America anymore except maybe hamburgers [okay bad joke].If we would treat our companies here with respect and not over regulate them, over lawyer them and call them evil for merely participating in capitalism and free markets we could do a lot better off in America and we would then see an immediate reduction in offshoring and overseas job loses. Think on this in 2006. You can bet I didn’t use that one in our windshield wash. This morning I was having breakfast with my good friend Diane at one of my favorite breakfast nooks. I enjoy the atmosphere there although I’ve been less than pleased with the customer service so far. This morning when we decided to go to breakfast, my mouth started watering for their delicious scones. They usually have 3-4 kinds available such as chocolate chip, blueberry and cranberry. I have shared these with my mom a few times and always love it with raspberry or strawberry jam and a “spot” of mint tea and honey. This morning was no different. I knew exactly what I wanted when I got there. When it was my time to order I asked the waitress to bring some jam with my scone. Her answer totally put me off and I got defensive. She said: “well, we might have some jelly, but most people want raspberry or strawberry and I’m not sure if I can find any, so you might have to have orange”.The hot prickles hit the back of my neck and I got ticked! I’m the customer after all, paying you and I don’t care if you have to run down the street to get the right jelly, I know you have it.. so FIND it!My answer surprised her. I said, “oh NO, that won’t do. I don’t eat orange. You’ll have to find me some of the other jams that I like”. (I think I even said I HATE orange... to be extra dramatic! Okay, so it's a little over the top... but I didn't WANT orange! )Long story short, she found the jelly. But we were both a bit upset throughout the process. I was upset because I’m a regular customer and I know what the restaurant offers. She was upset because I challenged her and strongly suggested After the window is cleaned with the cloth covered sponge and window cleaner, take a portion of the newspaper and dry the entire window. If you have another profit making program, such as a coupon book that you sell, now would be a good time to give them a flyer on it. After the fund raiser is over, I would suggest a time during your next meeting to honor all of those who attended and participated in this fund raiser. You might want to give honor unto those who did an excellent job, or maybe award some sort of prize for all participants. They will then jump through their skin to do a better job next time. Here is a word about alias names. If you belong to a church or other group and they perceive this as a nuisance to ask people for money, you may wish to use an alias name. Kidz for Kids is a great name for a Church Youth Group. Instead of using "Good Morning, We am from the 1st Self Righteous Church, and for a small donation we would like to wash your windshield." The Church may have a problem using the church name or some donator may have a problem donating to churches, you solve this by using an alias. My friend Kevin came up with the name Kidz 4 Kidz. Catchy name. It speaks volumes. People like to donate to youth organizations. So if anyone has a problem with using the name of the group, I would suggest an alias. Of course if you have a name like Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, I would leave it as such because of the name you will do tons of business. Best of all good luck and have fun.
