A Serious Warning to Business Owners
Over the past 19 years, I have worked with thousands of business owners in Africa, Canada and the United States. I foresee serious financial adversity looming for many entrepreneurs in the coming years, and perhaps a lot sooner than we may think. And before you conclude that this is mere speculation, let me share some reasons for my concern, and then allow me to offer you a solution. On a macro level, we all know that the dollar’s purchasing power has declined. The “world’s reserve currency” is in trouble. America slips further into debt. Since the end of the gold standard in 1971, this has escalated. With cheap labor increasingly available in India and China and a huge influx of new immigrants into the US and Canada, with the Can

    Back it UP!
One of the most often overlooked items when it comes to maintaining computer systems is the importance of backups. Whether you are a casual home user, an everyday power user, or a computer professional if you care about the data that you have stored on your computer then some form of BACKUP STRATEGY is necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of your important information. All information Technology professionals agree that the biggest threat to business survival is loss of data. There are many ways to lose your data. If you are not using some form of backup plan (such as an offsite data backup service), you are taking a risk every day your data is not backed up. Bedsides the obvious perils, such as a stolen or destro
In a perfect world, employees would take responsibility as if they were an owner or at the least, had a vested interest in the success of the company for which they worked. But it's not a perfect world, is it? It is possible though, to create an employment environment where employees will take on responsibility. This is the activity all successful employers desire of their staff.

Motivating your employees to become proactive rather than reactive is what you want, isn't it? Getting them to do more than react like a snail on Valium when things need to get done, or offer creative new solutions are necessary elements for business survival.

Past Labor Secretary Robert Reich commented on findings from a report the Labor Department commissioned which was conducted by researchers at Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business and Ernst & Young. The study cited companies like Motorola, which estimates that it earns $30 for every $1 invested in employee training. And Edy's Grand Ice Cream, which credits its employee management system with reducing inventories 66%, improving productivity 57%, and lifting unit sales volume 830%.

If you are willing to begin your journey (never a destination) to Partner to Empower, the above becomes possible. Let's spell out the word PARTNER to discover the necessary partnering elements for you to achieve success:

How To Think Statistically With Six Sigma
The data gathering exercise results in quantitative data in abundance. How you want to analyze it depends broadly on your plan to arrive at the solution. Nevertheless, it depends on three fundamental questions. But as a precursor to these questions, one must keep in mind that the larger purpose of using wide ranging interacting data is to understand the processes, problems and the best possible solutions as applied to Six Sigma implementation.Six Sigma: Statistical ThinkingStatistical thinking involves the tendency to want to study the complete contextual situation when a wide ranging statistical inputs and control factors of several natures may be interacting simultaneously to produce a particular output. To underst

A good logo vs. a FABULOUS logo
If you had a choice, which one would you choose, a good logo or a fabulous logo? Think about it for a second here, although I know the answer is crystal clear. Because many of us settle for a good logo created by a credible logo designer just because he or she is a credible logo designer who charges low prices. For example, I had a client who paid $500 for a normal-looking logo which looked like something anyone else can come up with. A couple of color changes to the logo, alteration of the logo text is inevitable and then maybe changing the alignment of the logo here and there….THAT’S IT! $500 per pop!!??There are lots of reasons why we settle for a normal-looking or good looking logo apart from price. One, it’s easy to change.

The Mobile Washing Businesses and Environmental Requirements
If you are running a mobile washing business you need to consider the importance of environmental controls to prevent dirty and polluted wash water from entering the storm drains. Not only is it the law but it is important for our Nations fresh water supplies. You may wish to know that solvents, like diesel fuel can pollute one million gallons of water with only one gallon of solvent. We run a mobile washing company and have put units in 23-states, our system blocks of storm drains and vacuums up the water for later discharge at a POTW, generally. However there are several different vendors who build custom units for us and others in the industry for various types of cleaning, such as rail cars, truck washing, washouts, forklifts

Understanding Workplace Violence and What You Can Do
Women face a greater likelihood of encountering workplace violence than men.Workplace violence victim: Anyone who has been injured, harmed, or who has suffered in some way due to acts of another while on the job or due to job related factors.Victims are not only those who are the direct targets of a violent act. They may also be those who innocently witness the act. For example, someone who witnesses a verbal or physical attack on a co-worker may suffer emotionally, mentally or physically as a result of what they saw. Victims may also be the unfortunate innocent person who is just at the wrong place at the wrong time.Types of violence: Among the types of violent acts committed in the workplace, the following ar

    Acceptance

Acceptance of your employees as fully functioning, rather than apprentice human beings is the second partnering element necessary to Partner to Empower. This was brought to the attention of American management in the late 1920s and early 1930s by Harvard's study of Western Electric's Hawthorne Works, unfortunately though, few listened.

    Recognition

Recognition is the third element for your Partner to Empower model. It's crucial that you embody that which you choose to praise and reward. The activities that you recognize, reward, and praise are the activities that will most likely be repeated.

During the first six months of 1995, as I traveled the country giving seminars, I asked all the attendees (entry level to executive) to write on an index card the one most important thing that their company or boss could do to improve their loyalty to their company. You might be amazed to know that praise and recognition was offered more than any other answer--much more than money.

    Tell the Truth

Tell the Truth about what's really going on in your company is the fourth key aspect for your Partner to Empower endeavor. In my survey on employee loyalty, this subject was a frequent contender for top honors. Employees want to know which way the wind is blowing at their company. If you hold back information, they will simply "fill in the blanks" and usually what they fill in is far from accurate. Withholding knowledge generally will only serve the one who withholds in retaining power. Power is limitless, unfortunately many think that thei
