Cliff at 61 years of age won the Sydney to Melbourne in 1988 and became a national hero.

He simply put no preconceptions on his ability to run the race. In other words he simply had no limitations in his mind. Perhaps if he knew about the rest stops each night things may have been different, but the core fact of the matter is he changed a belief and created a whole paradigm shift, all because he simply did not have any limitations in his mind.

As a result nobody sleeps in that race anymore. In order to win you have to run all night as Cliff did. Funnily enough a lot of the runners, including many who have won the race, use the Cliff Young Shuffle because it less stressful and more aerodynamic.
