We exercise our spiritual fruit when we obey the word of God. When trials come to try us in that obedience, they add weight as it were in the same manner as a weight lifter adds weight to increase the work load on his muscles that to increase strength. Any time the flesh or the outward man suffers in obedience to the word of God the inner man is strengthened.
II Corinthians 4:16-17 states, "For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, workth for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory..."
