Most of us in business have encountered the occasional angry customer. No matter what we say, this person remains angry.If we each step back, I’m certain most of us will admit to being that angry customer at least once in our lifetime. I know I’ve spoken a bit sharper than I should have a few times. I also know that I tend to lose my patience when I feel that I’m not being heard.So, what can we do when a customer is angry? We can immediately recognize that it is not about us. We are total strangers. While we know there is anger residing in the other person, we really do not know where it is coming from.We can also set our goal at seeking resolution versus arguing or trying to defend ourselves. When the customer sees us not getting defensive and truly trying to help, sometimes they will calm down enough to find out what the problem really is and then we can find the resolution.Offering an apology can also help towards resolution. I know when I’ve been the angry customer, I’d much rather hear an apology versus hearing excuses about why I was not provided the service I had expected. I can not tell you how many times I’ve had a sales person try to explain why the service was lousy. Usually they tell me they are understaffed, but I’ve also heard other excuses. From many states you can get lists of licensed attorneys, accountants, real estate agents, veterinarians, barbers, insurance companies, architects, nursing homes, cosmetologists, social workers, dentist, librarians, psychologist, manufacturers, licensed drivers, businesses, doctors, foreign corporations registered in the state, and many others. There are even 28 states that allow access to driver's license records!
When you're dealing with the government, expect to have to go through several people to finally get to talk with someone knowledgeable about the lists that are available.
This even more of a problem when dealing with the federal government. Again, be persistent. If you believe a particular list is available from the government don't take no for an answer when someone says there isn't such a list. here's a few sources to speed you on your way;
FSS Surplus Personal Property Zone. This is a list of people who have bought auctioned government property from the federal government. It's broken down into several files (regions). An example if region 8-10 consisting of 38,000 buyer addresses. It's available on tape from the General Services Administration for $50.
DOMESTIC MAIL MANUAL. 8,700 paid subscribers to the government's publication on postal regulations. It's available from the government printing office.
CATALOG OF UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS subscriber list. 1400 paid subscribers to this publication which lists monthly government publication. The list is available from the Government Printing Office. Call or write for current price and format.
BUSINESS AMERICA, INTERNATIONAL TRADE subscribers list of nearly 5,000 names and address of people either in export related fields, or expressing an interest. The list is available from the government printing office.
Again, these are just a few of the many, many lists available. Some are free. Most carry a nominal charge. Be sure to specify printed directory, diskettes, or tape format. It is also advisable to inquire and make sure the file you want has the complete name, and address for it to be usable - many files may only have a name and no address.several files (regions). The European Union is fining yet another American Company that it cannot compete with. Why? Because this time Microsoft has just become too efficient in its operating systems. Perfect competition assumes that consumers, firm and factor suppliers have perfect knowledge of cost and benefits. In the real world, there is often a great deal of ignorance and uncertainty. Thus people are unable to equate marginal benefit with marginal cost.Consumers purchase many goods only once or few times in a lifetime. Cars, washing machines, television and other consumer durable fall into this category. Consumers mat not be aware of the quality of such goods until they have purchased them, by which time it is too late. Advertising mat contribute to people’s ignorance by misleading them as to the benefits of a good.Firm are often ignorant of market opportunities, price, cost, the productivity of factor ( especially white-collar workers ), the activity of rival, etc.Many economic decisions are based on expected future conditions. Since the future can never be know for certain, many decision are taken that in the retrospect will be seen to have been wrong.In some case, it may be possible to obtain the information through the market. There may be an agency that will sell you the information or a newspaper or magazine that contains the information. In this case, you will have to decide whether the cost to you of buying the problem here is that you may not have sufficient information to judge how reliable the information is that you are buying!
