I’m not really sure how I managed to survive for fifteen years in a sales environment without learning how to play the game. Sure I could mention the major players and perhaps get a little piece of golf trivia into a conversation periodically but when it all came down to it, I really hated golf.
Was it the people I played with? Was it the attitude of the people I played with? Was it me because I sucked?

So what happened? In a word – divorce.
I am face and eyes in the middle of a divorce. Now that I have lots of time on my hands I thought about picking up golf. I purchased a bag set from a local golf retailer, went to Wal-Mart and bought a load of used balls and headed out on the course.
At the pro shop, one of the first things I was given was a scorecard. For some reason I said that I wouldn’t need it and off I went. This was a major moment in my very young golf related life.
I didn’t need a scorecard and more importantly, I didn’t want a scorecard. From that moment I began to enjoy the game and worry less about some arbitrary numbers on a card. Yeah I suck but I don’t need some little piece of paper to tell me that.
This year I have played more golf then my previous fifteen years combined. I still suck but I no longer hate the game. Each game has become a series of single shots. When I am playing, my goal on each and every hole is to make my next shot a good one. Simple. Notice I said simple and not easy.
