This unity is a strange one for sure, first of all we really shouldn’t be a part of this world, and through the use of SCUBA we are allowed this interaction. This allowance however has responsibilities. We are guests and we are offered a unique insight into life on this planet, not everyone can do this – although with increasing Global warming and CO2 levels it may soon be a necessity.
As guests we have to understand our impact upon marine life. Coral grows about 1cm in 100 years, one careless fin-kick and bang goes 1000 years of life, and touching coral introduces bacteria to the coral – something which it is unable to defend itself against. Hanging on turtles causing stress to the creature should not be tolerated how would you feel if a bunch of aliens came to planet earth and started hanging off you as you walked down the street – I am sure you would find it both unsettling a little stressful!
I have heard horrific stories of Dive Leaders cutting-up see Anemones to find to fish, this is not good at all, unfortunately it is done as a “crowd pleaser” to entertain the tourist diver, similarly feeding eggs to Napoleon Wrasse seems a clever idea, but why should we introduce a food source, bacteria, proteins etc into an environment which where it is neither needed or wanted? Can the Wrasse digest this food? Well put it like this when was the last time you say an abundance of chicken Eggs in the sea? As I thought never, so please do not feed the fish – fish can not digest bread, eggs etc. Once in the Maldives I saw a whole group of people feeding a Ray with bread rolls off of the House reef, snorklers climbing over the Pinnacles off Sharm in Egypt, Dives riding Turtles in Australia, shining lights on sleeping Parrot fish, therefore breaking their sleeping sack which they can not replace and are therefore opening to attack by predators and unfortunately the list can go on and on
