An Evening With An Enlightened Man
It was a quiet evening by the Ganges as the young man sat on the steps and watched the sun set over the holy waters.Despite the beauty of the scene, he did not appreciate it.The lilting cadence of the bathers chatting loudly seemed far away, and even their playful splashing of each other did not amuse him.Someone started chanting a bhajan about Krishna and the gopis and others soon joined him until their happy voices slapped on the shores of the river and made the mosquitoes pause

    Quit Smoking the Easy Way
Smoking can and does kill many people every year. Why do people still smoke? Besides being the cause of lung cancer - a killer disease, smoking is also becoming more and more cost prohibitive! At $4.00 + per pack, a two pack a day habit amounts to 4 x 2 x 365 = $2,920.00 per year! Yet, the money is really secondary, the real cost is the ill effect on one’s health, and by the way, it’s not only the issue of longevity; it is also the state of your present health and well being. Smoking saps your energy a
By far the nicest accommodation option on Lamu Island is to stay in one of the privately owned Swahili style houses in Shela Village. You take over the entire house which could be three to four stories with open courtyards and roof terraces. You are looked after by local house staff and a cook.

The houses are built right in the village of Shela, so you get a feel for the community. You hear the muezzin’s call to prayer, you pass women hidden beneath floating black bui buis, and you share narrow passageways with donkeys.

There are bright white washed walls and brilliant bougainvilleas. Shela is small, and it is an easy walk to the beach or to catch a dhow into Lamu town. You can arrange to go snorkeling in Lamu or on a romantic sunset Lamu dhow cruise.

Lamu is a Muslim Island-guests staying in private houses are advised to bring their own wine, spirits and any pork products they desire. Butter and cheese can be difficult to find in Shela.

Three private houses are described below. Others are available and it seems that more will be opening soon, if not already opened.

    Shela House and Palm House

Guests have been coming to Shela house for some years. Palm house opened in Novembers 1996. Staying in either house is pure bliss. They are breathtakingly beautiful, totally releasing ad very exotic. You fell special and pampered from the moment you arrive by dhow from the airstrip and are greeted at the jetty by the welcoming house staff. In both houses the kitchen, dining and living area are on the lower level. Climb up smooth steps to explore the various floors above-bedrooms with Lamu beds, sunny outdoor passage ways, cool areas for sitting and reading, bookcases filled with books. Walls are bright white wash, the floors are a cool yellow and windows have no glass to impede the breeze. Everywhere is a view worth a picture-whether it is a looking down into the central court yard, into the narrow streets below or out to the blue of the shinning sea beyond the white minaret of the nearby mosque.

The top levels of the houses are open –sided, thatched roof terraces which catch the breeze and offer panoramic views over the village and the water beyond. There is a bar with fridge-ice and cold drinks. This is the place to read or sleep away the heat of the day on a Lamu daybed or in the hammock, the place to gather for sundowners and listen to the evening call to prayers, the place to come to after dinner to look at the impossibly bright stars, the place it’s especially hard to leave when you have to return to the real world.

Are You Over 35; Now you can join the Army
The United States Army has gotten very smart in the last few months, as now they are taking those over thirty five and allowing them to sign up. Why is this totally smart? Well because when you are young and full of piss and vinegar you make mistakes that 35-year olds and over do not make. In fact you have lots of skills too that you can bring to the table mid-career in American Life. There are aircraft mechanics, truck drivers with a million miles and folks who have worked around machinery, heavy equi

Golf Ball Marker Tokens - Are They A Collectible?
So important is putting to golf that it has its own tokens to mark ball placements on the putting green. These tokens are used often. There seems to be some mystery involved with the origin of the ball marker tokens. No one really knows when or where they first appeared. Their manufacture seem to go as far back as 1941.A historically significant ball marker from the 1941 British War Relief Tournament is one of the few pieces dated. Another piece is dated 1982 and was used at the U.S. Open p

What is a Mid Life Crisis?
Each and every one of us has some idea what a mid life crisis is. However, I want to know what it really is. All I know is that it is somehow different for men and women and not everyone experiences it. From my point of view, young adults get middle life crisis because they dread the changes they fear will make their lives different. Of course, this is true but it is not as scary as you might think. Once women and men understand that they cannot turn back time, everything goes back to normal. Even thou

You’ll feel that you don’t really want to leave the house but there is an endless almost deserted beach for lovely walks and swims, and there are dhow owners eager to take you sailing, snorkeling or to ancient ruins under giant baobabs. You can catch the Peponi hotel boat into Lamu town for the morning; you can wander around Shela village just enjoying the charm and exotic nature of the place.
