The outdoor pool is larger than most in-city hotels.

Students work with the hotel’s professional staff to learn the hotel industry. With all those students learning to help you, the service and food are great. Utalii is good value for money.

The three story hotel has 43 double rooms and seven suites with kitchenettes. All have been recently redecorated and have ensuite bathrooms, large windows, and balconies. Rooms on the highway side of the hotel have air conditioning to block out the noise, but we prefer the rooms on the garden/pool side.

Although the Utalii hotel is tastefully decorated, it has no real African character-the hotel could be anywhere. However, the gardens around the pool and pool bar are very inviting, and the pool is one half Olympic size. There are two tennis courts and guests can golf at the Muthaiga Golf course.

4. The blue post Hotel Kenya

Just off Thika road (A2) approximately 40 kilometers from Nairobi, the Blue Post Hotel still attracts a mixed cross-section of Kenyan residents. The hotel was built in 1906 on a promontory where the Chania and Thika rivers meet to form the Thika and Chania Falls. Early settlers stopped there for tea and talk and to see the falls from the hotel’s garden. Today the falls are quite wide but rather muddy with more than a whiff of industry.

The hotel has seen better days. It still has expansive grounds with outdoor eating areas, view point for the falls, and an outdoor market where local crafts are made and sold. There are large conference facilities. Except for the Blue post Hotel and Delmonte Company, Thika has little appeal for the tourist.
