Baby teeth appear at different ages for different babies, although the first tooth generally occurs by the time baby reaches his or her first birthday. By three years of age, most children will have all of their primary teeth.

There are 20 primary or “baby teeth” – 10 in the upper jaw and 10 in the lower jaw. The appearance of baby teeth is typically as follows:

    • upper and lower incisors (by baby’s first birthday)
    • upper lateral incisors
    • bottom lateral incisors
    • top and bottom molars (around 18 months of age)
    • cuspids (eyeteeth)
    • second set of molars (around 2 years of age)

Following are indications that your baby is teething:

    • increased fussiness
    • nighttime crying
    • clingy behavior
    • excessive drooling
    • chewing on fingers, teething rings, and other objects
    • swollen, red, inflamed gums
    • increased demand in breast or bottle feeding
    • rejection of breast or bottle (because sucking hurts the gums)
    • poor appetite
    • interrupted sleep

Following are tips to help soothe your baby's teething discomfort:

    • Wash your hands thoroughly, then gently massage the swollen gums with one finger.
    • Soak a clean, soft washcloth in apple juice. Wring it out, tie the cloth in a knot, and place it in the freezer for 30 minutes. When frozen, place it in your baby’s mouth, then hands. The combination of the cold and the texture of the washcloth will ease your baby's pain.

Once the new teeth are in place clean them with a soft baby toothbrush or wipe them with gauze. Never allow your baby to fall asleep with a bottle as this will lead to tooth decay.
