I suppose I was seven or eight years old, and I’m certain my parents knew that the gift I wanted for Christmas was a BB gun. I dreamed that I would become a great mountain man like Davy Crockett and I even had a coon skin cap and a dog named Grinder who was tough enough to fight most of the cats in our neighborhood. But how could I fight bears and mountain lions and bad guys if I didn’t have a gun? Christmas began like every other day. Dad and all six boys got up at 5:30, milked the cows, fed the stock, and then headed back to the house for a big Christmas breakfast of sausage and eggs which mom prepared. Then we would all sit around the tree and take turns opening our holiday gifts. I watched my brothers’ excitement as they opened their toy trucks, record albums and other meaningful gifts. When my turn came I opened up some socks and underwear and tried not to look too disappointed that I didn’t receive a BB gun.

I know what you’re thinking….there could be kids that would shout for joy if they received one pair of socks and a crust of bread. I know. But I’m not Tiny Tim or The Little Match Girl and I didn’t experience the Irish Potato Famine or the Battle of Stalingrad; but darn it, to a seven year-old, that BB gun was meaningful.

So, we visited neighbors and relatives and had a wonderful day going from house to house and seeing everyone’s gifts. I was happy except for that little dark cloud that kept reminding me that everybody in the Milky Way Galaxy got exactly what they wanted except for me. I knew unequivocally that if Charles Dickens knew of my suffering that he would replace Tiny Tim with me.

That night when the cows were milked and the supper dishes washed, Dad called us all into the family room and asked us to look at the tree. We all sat looking at the tree expecting Dad to give us a profound speech on the true meaning of Christmas. He stared at us for a second, then walked over and pulled a BB gun out of the tree. You think Opie liked his fishing pole? Forget it. I lived with my gun; I fought lions and bears. I even changed history because when I defend the Alamo, I won!
