But at some point, you must bite the bullet, learn to make your own decisions, and live with the consequences.

      There will always be people who give you their opinion of what you should do. Consider the source, smile, be polite, and listen to what they have to say. But make your own decision based on the information that you have.

        Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? Using A Little Math To Make Your Presentations Sizzle!
        The agenda states an end time of 2:00 pm, and yet it is 2:10 and the guy is still droning on with only 52 more slides to go in his presentation!You are told that you will have 30 minutes to present and now you show up and find out your time has been cut to 20 minutes because the person before you went over time.As the band, Chicago sings, “Does anybody really know what time it is? Does anybody really care about time?” Start your next meeting with this song and then share this mathematical formula to help the speakers for the next time.The average person speaks 150-200 words per minute. During a presentation we should slow that pace down to about 125 words per minute to allow for better enunciation, interaction and clarity. If you are asked to speak for 15 minutes, do the math…15 times 125 equals 1,875 words…period! Type up what you want to say and then do a word count (go to TOOLS menu and select WORD COUNT). This will let you know how long you will need to cover this information.When people ask me how many slides they should have in a 15 minute presentation, I say, “It depends.” How many words are you going to say on each slide? Sit down at your laptop and type out verbatim what you think you will say with each slide. Of course you are not going to bring this typed transcript up and read it, but it will tell you where you need to cut or add more detail.If you have 30 minutes of material prepared, ask yourself what you would cut if they took you down to 20 minutes. What would you cut if you had only 15 minutes? This is a great exercise in editing and really drilling down to your point.A little planning ahead of time will really mak

          Everybody's Workin' For The Weekend!
          Ah, a great, cheesy classic American rock song! Wasn't it so right, too? In the 80's when that song came out, everybody was working for the weekend. Your week was simply black and white; you worked Monday through Friday and at 5pm on Friday you free and clear until Monday morning at 8am. Let's a take a look at how things have (DRASTICALLY) changed since the good ol' days.It's 1981, Loverboy was climbing to the top of the charts with their hit song 'Working for the Weekend'. People are getting their MBA degrees like a they were in a Waco, TX cult (because, at that time, that was the only way to get ahead in your field-get a higher degree). Saturday morning cartoons were worth getting up for. Micheal Jordan and Kirby Puckett were sports idols you didn't mind if your kids worshiped; in fact, you preferred it!Things have changed considerably in the past 20 years. Your degree clearly doesn't indicate your income level anymore and your week is hardly black and white, rather, it is a shade of gray. Your seniority at your company doesn't mean a gosh-darn thing! You may be there for 15 years, and then some kid right out of college starts working there, she saves the company $1M her first year, next thing you know, you are reporting to her!Today, you may go in to work at 10am on Saturday and take Monday off, as more and more companies go towards a Results Only Work Environment, which was started by the Best Buy Corporation in Minnesota. You may log into your work email account after the kids have gone to bed. Or you may respond to a email message on your Blackberry while you are on a family hike up north somewhere.           The Keys to the Kingdom: Finding PAIN
          It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience. -Julius CaesarOne day I was talking with one of the technicians at Lanier named Bill Wilbur. We were talking about why people paid more for some things than others did. Bill said something that I never will forget; “You can’t pay too much for something you really want!” Over the years I have found this statement to be right on the money. If this is the case then how do you get your prospect to really want your product? The answer is simple. Get them to see your product solving a major problem for them. How do you do this? The key is asking the right PAIN questions.When you go to the doctor they don’t immediately start trying to sell you on the benefits of what they are going to prescribe. Before a doctor can help you with your PAIN he has to ask you diagnostic questions. A great salesperson is like a great doctor. They know how to ask great diagnostic questions. One of things I have done to help myself with formulating diagnostic questions is to use the acronym PAIN. PAIN stands for problem, anxiety, interests, and needs.PROBLEMSEvery business in America has problems. For some businesses, cash flow is a major problem. For other businesses, declining revenues can be the challenge they are trying to deal with. If you walk into an appointment with a list of PAIN questions you significantly increase your odds of success. Ask yourself before you walk into an appointment, “If I were the CEO of XYZ Company, what problems would I most likely be faced with?” If possible talk to vendors you know who call on the account, to see if they can give you

        2. You Will Make Mistakes – Learn from them and grow

          You are not infallible and you will sometimes make a bad decision. It happens to everyone -- just don’t do it too often. Learn from your mistakes. Study, get more information, look at things from a different perspective.

          If possible, don’t make important decisions when you have an excessive amount of stress. Step back, think, take a walk, relax in a Jacuzzi bath, sloooooowww downnnn. When your head is clear, come back to the problem and make your best decision.

        3. Money still doesn’t grow on trees – Use it wisely

          Most small businesses do not make much money at first. But whether you do or not, you must still use your money wisely. You must learn the difference between a good value and something that is cheap. For instance, Ink Jet printers are cheap but laser printers are a good value. If you
