    Strategy and Tactics in Marketing
Most companies only operate on a tactical level. This amounts to the boss going to the staff and saying “Go get more business.” It’s been said that more sales will cure almost any business problem. While this is true, the strategic business will be set up in such a way that every tactic implemented will drive sales and gain ground on achieving the over-all strategic goals. When a sale is made it’s a great moment! However as soon as the deal is done you are OUT OF BUSINESS. You now have to get out there and chase the next sale and the next sale and the next, ad infinitum! Let's define strategy...If a military commander decides to “disrupt the enemy’s supply line t

    Pushing Cards or Pulling Interest
We've all been on the receiving end, haven't we? We've had the business card thrust under our nose, or stuck into our hand, accompanied with the words, "Here, take my card." Most certainly we all react similarly, taking the card, but never wanting to do business with that person. Those let me tell you about me people give networking a bad name.Networking can be the best way to gain more success, but if done improperly, it can be the death of the important relationships needed for your success. Ivan Misner, Founder and Chairman, BNI (Business Network International), would tell us that the proper motto for networking is, "Giver’s gain." Tim Sanders, author of
School will soon be out for the summer. In some ways, I am tired of the daily grind up getting up, coaxing children to eat, fighting them into clothes and running to the bus with just seconds to spare. On the other hand, my business hours are about to have an atomic bomb dropped on them. Phone calls become completely impossible as does 5 minutes of quiet thinking time to finish an email or an article. "MOMMMMMMM!!!!!" is the battle cry of the day, usually followed by, "I'm hungry", "I'm bored", "He hit me" or "When are you gonna be done so I can play on the computer?". Then, there's the dreaded, "Can we invite (insert name here) over?" ARGGGHHHHH! More children!!!! One little boy's nanny has this nasty little trick of pushing him out the door at 9am and then seems to never check on him the rest of the day. I'm not sure why she thinks I'm the nanny. There's nothing like having extra children running in and out of your house like they own the place all day.

Many of you are probably laughing and nodding in agreement with this scenario. It's great that your kids have so many friends and get to enjoy the "lazy days" of summer, but you still have a business to run. So, how can we successfully run a business and be a full-time mom when the kids are underfoot ALL DAY LONG?

There is More to Networking Than Meets the Eye
So you have printed out your business cards and perfected your elevator speech, gone to several networking functions and still the phone is not ringing. So what, you ask, is the problem? The answer is quite simple, there is more to networking than meets the eye. Many business owners have the notion that networking is simply showing up at a networking function with plenty of business cards and introducing their business effectively. When things begin to wrong they start to think it is their elevator speech that needs tuning and they work effortlessly to try to get their message across. Instead, if you, as a business owner, want networking to truly work you have to

    Public Relations and Goodwill
One highly effective type of advertising costs virtually nothing: public relations. With public relations, the newsworthiness of some aspect of your business or business activities can earn you free publicity in newspapers or magazines, or even on radio or television. However, it must truly be newsworthy. You might publicize, for example, a lecture, a demonstration or a workshop being presented at your business site - an event that news outlets could list in their community calendars or possibly even send a reporter to cover. Find out who at a station or publication handles such local events and send that person a news release. Altern

Remember, this is the reason you decided to work from home. The most commonly named reason for launching a home business is to be close to children. Well, you're good and close now! Put a photo of your happy, smiling children next to your computer so you can be reminded of exactly WHY you are home. That will help you when one of them comes in covered in dirt and deposits a pile of it on your office floor.

So, here are some tips for making the most of working from home with children:

    • Get up early. Most kids sleep in a little in the summer (the older they are the more likely they are to do that). Keep your regular schedule and get in an hour or two of work before they get up. Don't worry about getting dressed, just work in your jammies until you hear the pitter-patter of little feet!
    • Go Wireless! If you have a laptop, get a wireless card for it and set up your house for wireless! Take your computer outside and sit on the grass while your kids ride their bikes or play. At least you are there to sa
